Opera and ballet theatre named after Hvorostovsky D. A.

Temple of musical and theatrical culture on the Bank of the Yenisei, the pearl of the architectural ensemble of the pre-bridge square of the regional center.

History of creation

The first Opera in Krasnoyarsk was set at the end of the XIX century on the stage of the drama theater named after Pushkin. Musical and theatrical culture of the city has developed and with time came understanding about the need of a separate building.

In 1966, in the center of Krasnoyarsk began the construction of the theater of musical Comedy, but a few years later the Council of Ministers of the RSFSR decided to open the Opera and ballet theater in the city, which was fair, since the theater of musical Comedy already had its premises on Mira Road, 129. The initial project has made the necessary improvements, and the building has been redesigned. Officially, the Opera and ballet theatre was opened in August 1978, which was timed to the 350th anniversary of Krasnoyarsk.

The symbolic key of huge size, made for the opening of the theater, is now stored in the local History Museum of the city.

History of development

Before the opening of the theater, in addition to the construction of the building, work was carried out to form a team. The question of completing the theater troupe was not easy, as in Krasnoyarsk and in the region there were no professional Opera singers and ballet dancers. Specialists from all over the country, including the best graduates of conservatories and choreographic schools, were invited to work in the theater. The singers came up with good vocal training, but did not have the practice of performance on stage, so they had to rehearse a lot. However, in preparation for the opening, everyone worked so well that a truly professional, well-coordinated troupe appeared on the stage.

In the first years of work Krasnoyarsk Opera and ballet theatre was assisted with the design of performances from all over the Soviet Union. Over time, the new theater became famous not only in Russia but also abroad. The artists of the theater toured the USA, France, Greece, Spain, Japan and many other countries.

The repertoire includes almost all Opera and ballet classics, and the pride is not only performances that have stood the test of time, loved by the public and appreciated by critics, but also productions of recent years, replete with experimental Director's moves, as well as new versions of classical ballets.

The Leningrad theatre provided invaluable assistance in preparing for the opening of the first theatre season. Kirov (now the Mariinsky theatre), whose workers copied the notes to the twelve performances by hand.

About the building

The theater building was built in 1966-1978 according to the project of the Moscow architect Mikhalev I. A. Initially, the building was planned to house the theater of musical Comedy, but in the early 70s, when it was decided to open the Opera and ballet theater in the city, significant changes were made to the project. The building was rebuilt taking into account the new requirements and the limited budget, in addition, the design took into account that the new building had to fit into the existing architectural ensemble of the square, which included: the Krasnoyarsk hotel, the city Administration, the Communal bridge and the River station.

The theater was built by the forces of the whole city. Most of the Krasnoyarsk enterprises of that time participated in the construction — Krasnoyarsk machine-building plant, metallurgical plant "Sibelektrostal", woodworking plant, shipbuilding and television plants. Sayan marble and granite, various metals, glass were used in the decoration of the building. Large crystal chandeliers, consisting of hundreds of iridescent pendants, were specially made in the Czech Republic. On the sides of the main entrance there are huge sculptures made of copper, made by Moscow masters.

The internal content of the theater is unique — three rehearsal rooms and a double stage, a rotating stage with lowering hatches and lifting platforms, a system of electric drives for changing scenery, turning the stage, creating various stage effects.

The last renovation of the theater took place in 2010. All office premises were renovated, Windows, doors, wiring were replaced, columns outside the building were strengthened.

For reflection of sound underneath the orchestra pit was poured by the special glass coated with a cement film. For these purposes, the whole city gathered champagne bottles — several tens of thousands of such bottles were broken.

Theatre today

Krasnoyarsk Opera and ballet theatre is considered to be one of the most favorite places of cultural recreation not only for local residents, but also for guests of the city. It is also the center of creative meetings of famous artists from different Russian cities and foreign countries. To date, the repertoire includes more than 50 theatrical productions.

In 2018, the Krasnoyarsk Opera and ballet theatre was named after Dmitri Alexandrovich Hvorostovsky — a world-famous Opera singer who began his professional career on the Krasnoyarsk Opera stage.
