The prerequisites for the creation of a musical theater in Krasnoyarsk appeared at the end of the 19th century, when several operas were shown at the Pushkin drama theater. When it became clear that the musical theater is able to exist in Krasnoyarsk as an independent, at this time the country has actively formed the Communist ideology and economy, and all the bourgeois culture was suppressed. Operetta and musical Comedy were recognized as bourgeois genres, so the musical theater opened in 1930, having existed for two years, was closed
The second attempt was made in 1944. At that time, the country was still covered by the great Patriotic War (World War II). and, at that time, Yakutsk ensemble of the Leningrad operetta, where it was evacuated to, was in the Krasnoyarsk region. It was decided to move the ensemble to Krasnoyarsk and on its basis to create a theater of musical Comedy. But in the postwar period, in 1950, the theater was closed, the artists returned to their hometowns, and the remaining specialists were transferred to Irkutsk.
The third attempt was the most successful. Experienced artists, Directors and other specialists were gathered from various cities of the Soviet Union. The theater opened in February 1959, all in the same Palace of culture of railway Workers, where there is today.
The genre of musical Comedy could not take root for a long time in the emerging Communist society, which believed that this genre is often characterized by vulgar methods of circus clowning, vulgar and annoying acting techniques, low-grade humor.
Immediately after the opening of the theater comes the time of its heyday — the 60s, it is in demand by the audience and actively tours the cities of the Soviet Union. Young artists from Odessa, Lvov, Kharkov and Moscow conservatories were called to the troupe. The repertoire was based on operettas — classical and modern, Western and Soviet. In 1964, the Palace of culture finally came under the jurisdiction of the theater. In 1981, the reconstruction of the building began. The troupe was forced to move to the Palace of culture "Kombaynostroitel", it was on this stage that the first experimental rock operas were staged.
In 1993, the theatre returned to its new building. For half a century, the repertoire of the theater has accumulated a huge baggage of a wide variety of productions: classical operettas, ballets, rock operas, vaudeville and many other theatrical productions. The name "Musical Comedy" was no longer suitable and in 2008 the theatre was renamed "Krasnoyarsk musical theatre".
On September 26, 1963, the Krasnoyarsk musical Comedy theatre hosted a meeting of young builders of Siberia and the Far East with the participation of the first cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin. It was held in the musical theater, because at that time it was the only building with a hall for 1200 seats.
The theater settled in the building of the House of culture of railway workers. Spacious auditorium, good acoustics, interior in the style of "Stalin's Empire" and a huge chandelier. However, years passed and the building needed repair. In 1981 it was closed for reconstruction by architect Areg Sarkisovich Demirkhanov. From the original building of the theater were only the Foundation of the stage, stairwells and openings. The project included a spacious foyer with Sayan marble, a new lighting and sound system, a two-storey foyer decorated with wood and granite, a floor-to-ceiling mirror and a fountain with a Chinese chandelier hanging over it. New chairs with green upholstery, large new carpet, suspended ceiling. It was planned to complete a large-scale repair in 1986, but the reconstruction was significantly delayed and was completed only in 1993 — the return of the theater to the new building, which gained its modern look.
In 2010, the management of the theater decided to demolish the fountain in the hall of the building, apparently it was not easy to maintain it, so today it will not be possible to fully admire the magical atmosphere that was created by the architect.
In 2017, the auditorium was overhauled: all the chairs were replaced, the orchestra pit, the carpet were repaired, the walls were painted, and new acoustic equipment was installed.
During the large-scale reconstruction of the last century a huge wall of almost 10 meters height and a thickness of about a meter was demolished. Bulldozers broke it with excavator buckets — it was impossible to use explosives, as the building was located in the city center.
Today, performances of the musical theater include a large number of genres — comic operas, musicals, vaudeville, musical comedies, many of which have won prizes at theater festivals. In addition to creative activities, the theatre is engaged in the development and promotion of modern theatrical culture. In the building of the theater on the second floor there is a small Museum dedicated to its own theatrical activities.
One of the most successful productions of the theater was the musical “Vinyl”, which tells the story of the struggle of Soviet youth for the possibility of bright self-expression in Communist society.
